Camping – Windcreek State Park, AL

When we first got our little camper, all we wanted to do was head out and land wherever the road took us. Not exactly the smartest move if this is your first camping trip towing a new camper and never once set up a campsite. We decided to do the practical thing and plan our first trip and not go too far from home just in case we had any trouble.

After a little research, Wind Creek State Park in Alexander City, AL is where we decided to go. Wind Creek sits on beautiful Lake Martin which has over 750 miles of wooded shoreline.  It was very easy to book a space online. One downside, you are not assigned a camping space until you arrive.

We loaded up and set off on our first ever camping trip in our little camper. The towing was not bad at all. We have a 2005 Toyota 4Runner, and we were pulling a Jayco Jayfeather UltraLite 16V. It is just a wee camper to say the least., very little sway and easy to maneuver.

The site

When we arrived at the campground, parking was a breeze and checking in was super easy. We had our space number and headed over to our campsite. We were fortunate enough to book early and I requested a PremiumSite so that we would have water access, a view, and a concrete pad. The cost was $59/night. This may seem high for most campers, but we wanted our first experience to be as smooth as possible and this seemed like the logical choice.

The grounds

The grounds are very clean, easy to follow directions around the park and very clean restroom and shower facilities. Each campsite comes with a full hookup, fire ring and picnic table. I can’t say enough about how beautiful it is here. We were right on the water, we grilled everyday, swam, took naps and had one of the best weekends.  There is an ice cream shop located just down the road inside the park as well as Kayak rentals. Everyone at the campground was super friendly and helpful. Even though we were “newbys” there always seemed to be advice and helpful tips flowing in all of our conversations. We will definitely be back to this campground.
